In 2020, the Japanese government issued the “policy of strengthening the fight against sexual violence and crimes”. Based on this plan, the Japanese MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) has decided to strengthen relevant measures from the following four aspects to prevent children from becoming perpetrators, victims or bystanders of sexual violence: implementing life and safety education; formulating the Law on the Prevention of Sexual Violence by Teaching Staff against Children and Students, and severely punishing teachers who commit indecent acts; improving schools consultation system; enhancing social enlightenment education. The specific measures taken by Japan to prevent and control sexual violence against children can provide some reference and inspiration for China to solve this kind of problem.

An Analysis of Contemporary Japanese Womens Concept of Marriage ——Examples from Three Japanese Film and Television Dramas in Recent Years “Establishing the State of Manzhouguo”
    LIU Bing
    JAPANESE RESEARCH    2019, 33 (4): 36-44.   DOI: 10.14156/j.cnki.rbwtyj.2019.04.005
    Abstract2912)      PDF(pc) (4355KB)(269)       Save
With the rapid development of Japanese economy and the increasing awareness of women, contemporary Japanese womens concept of marriage shows different characteristics from the past. More and more women get married late or even stay single, and extramarital affairs seem to be getting worse. In addition, the number of women in the workplace is increasing, and the conflict between family and career further aggragrates the trend of late marriage and nonmarriage. These phenomena are inextricably linked to the level of social and economic development and the historical and cultural traditions of Japan. They also reflect the changes in marriage concepts caused by Japanese womens selfawareness and increased sense of independence and the fact that peoples demand for the initial groups “family” function is increasingly focused on meeting highlevel emotional needs. In recent years, the three most popular Japanese film and television dramas “No Marriage”, “Day Yan”, and “Flower Core” reflect the current situation of contemporary Japanese womens marriage.

Japan is one of the most developed countries in food and nutrition education in the world. Since the promulgation of The Basic Act on Shokuiku in 2005, The Basic Plan for Promotion of Shokuiku is devised and implemented every five years in Japan, which continuously stimulates the all-round development of food the and nutrition system. It has become an important national policy that deeply affects the lifestyle, moral values and behavior of the Japanese population as well as local economic development. The Basic Plan for Promotion of Shokuiku has been formulated and implemented for four phases, and the overall objectives and key work of each plan are different. In general, the first two phases put more emphasis on deepening the national attention to food and nutrition education, popularizing the basic dietary knowledge, and laying a foundation for “educating people with food”. The third phase paid more attention to the important role of food and nutrition education in promoting economic development and cultural inheritance, hoping to realize “building a nation on food”. On this basis, the fourth phase proposes to build a sustainable development of digital food and nutrition education. The Basic Plan for Promotion of Shokuiku has the characteristics of emphasizing legal protection, implementing management by objectives, emphasizing curriculum system construction, and mobilizing various social resources, which has important reference value for the development of food and nutrition education in China. However, it is also faced with practical challenges such as complex influencing factors and the failure to meet some target values on time, which reflects the long-term and complexity of the construction of food and nutrition education system.

The Current Situation and Trend of Conservative Politics in Japan
    LIAN Degui
    Japanese Research    2024, 38 (2): 1-9.   DOI: 10.14156/j.cnki.rbwtyj.2024.02.001

Japanese politics mainly were governed by the conservative Liberal Democratic Party for a long time after 1955. The partys factions were divided into conservative rightists and conservative liberals, with the two factions alternating in controlling the Liberal Democratic Partys leadership, which also represents the current state of conservative politics in Japan. Initially, the conservative liberal Kochikai and Keiseikai held a dominant position for a long time. After entering the 21st century, with the rise of Seiwakai, conservative rightwing replaced conservative liberals to gain dominance. Seiwakai showed a clear right-wing inclination because this faction received support from the rightwing in Japan. The rise and fall of Seiwakai are closely related to the rise and fall of right-wing influence. Seiwakai achieved the longest serving cabinet in history during the reign of Shinzo Abe, causing political right-wing tendencies in Japan. Fumio Kishida, a conservative liberal in the Liberal Democratic Partys Kochikai, formed a cabinet to govern in 2021, which marks the regaining of the dominance of conservative politics in Japan by conservative liberals, and Japanese politics enters the post Abe Era. In the post Abe era, the Kishida Cabinets support rate continues to decline due to the influence of the black gold politics and church interference issues that originated from Seiwakai. Conservative liberals are implicated, and the Liberal Democratic Partys authoritarian politics are criticized. Japanese politics also falls into a predicament.

Japans Stalker Regulation Law was formulated based on the homicide that occurred in 1999. Since the enactment of the Stalker Regulation Law in 2000, every time a new type of stalking incident occurs, it had to be revised. The law has been revised three times in 2013, 2016, and 2021. In the first revision, the behavior of sending e-mail was included in the objects of penalty, and in the second revision, the stalking behavior related to SNS was strengthened. The third revision added punishment for obtaining location information through Global Positioning System without the permission of the other party and installing positioning equipment without the consent of the other party. The specific contents of Japans Stalker Regulation Law and its three revisions, as well as the ways to solve the stalking problem in the form of legislation and official and non-governmental cooperation, has some implications for China.

    Abstract2385)      PDF(pc) (1500KB)(192)       Save
Since 2001, Chinas overall export trade of agricultural products to Japan has maintained rapid growth, with an increase in the variety and quantity of products. Japan has long been the largest national market for Chinas agricultural product export trade, which has a significant impact on the development of Chinas agricultural product export trade. However, in recent years, there are still problems in the development of Chinas agricultural product export trade cooperation with Japan, such as relatively insufficient total volume, slowing growth, weak momentum, limited expansion of product types and quantities, unreasonable structure, low level of cooperation, weakened trade complementarity, frequent obstacles from trade barriers, and continued intensification of external competition. In the new era, China should take the RCEP construction as an important opportunity to accelerate the transformation and upgrading of domestic agricultural economy, improve the quality inspection system of agricultural products, and enhance the international competitiveness of agricultural products. Promote the alignment of agricultural strategies between China and Japan, and improve bilateral cooperation mechanisms. Expand the variety and quantity of products, actively cultivate new growth points in trade, and adjust the structure by increasing the quantity. Promote bilateral trade liberalization and facilitation negotiations, advance the construction of interconnected infrastructure, optimize the logistics and distribution system for agricultural products, innovate trade cooperation methods, promote cross-border e-commerce business, and achieve high-quality and sustainable development of Japans agricultural product export trade.

In order to consolidate the position as colonial rulers and change Kantoushu into the base for external aggression, the Japanese authorities established very comprehensive colonial institutions which were responsible for the education from primary to higher levels. Furthermore, for the purposes of invasion and colonial ruling of Chinese people, the authorities issued a series of systems of Chinese education and policies encouraging Chinese learning, and implemented Chinese courses in all schools in order to communicate with the the colonized people without translators and rule them. The paper analyzed the real purpose and significance of Chinese education to Japanese by the colonist authorities, and disclosed Japan’s wild ambition of imperialists to occupy the northeast of China permanently.

From traditional Diligence Cuisine and Kaiseki Cuisine in the middle ages to the eclectic cuisine in modern times, military diet system in wartime, and modern “WesternJapaneseChinese” multiple cuisine, the Japanese diet system has been subject to the impact of conjunct moulding by driving forces such as national politics, knowledge and technology, imperialism and economic expansion. The One Village One Product (OVOP) movement in Japan lasted for half a century, and has influenced more than one hundred countries around the world. Those successful experiments have a cerain reference value for Chinas implementation of the rural revitalization strategy. In Japans OVOP movement, theory research and practice exploration are parallel and complementary, and human cultivation and revitalization are its core and soul. Based on the data from previous national situation surveys in Japan from 1980 to 2020 and the household income and consumption survey from 2000 to 2020, by analyzing the population sociology and demographic economics characteristics of marriage, employment, income and consumption of the single group in Japan, this paper preliminarily investigated the status and potential of economic development of the single population in Japan. The study found that in 2020, the number of single people aged 15 and above in Japan exceeded 43 million, and the proportion of single people exceeded 40%. From 1980 to 2020, the number and proportion of single people continued to increase. The single population is mainly unmarried, and the ratio of divorce and widowhood of single women is significantly higher than that of single men. The proportion of unmarried, divorced and widowed living alone is increasing. The unmarried people living alone are masculine and aging, but the number of elderly single households is gradually increasing, and the trend of feminization and aging is prominent. From 2000 to 2020, the employment rate of single people declined, the monthly per capita income level of singlefamily workers was slightly lower, but the monthly per capita consumption level was higher, and the proportion of consumption for housing, entertainment and socializing was higher. According to the study, the rise of a singles society in Japan has promoted the development and prosperity of its singles economy, which in turn will solidify its singles social characteristics and further make it difficult for Japan to deal with the problem of low birthrate and aging population.

In the process of carrying out the mainland policy in modern Japan, “the TwentyOne Demands” is an important practice of Japans “Keep North and Go South” invasion of China. Following the failure of the Okuma Cabinets armed invasion of China, the Terauchi Cabinet transformed its strategy, vigorously pursued economic invasion of China centered on the Nishihara loans, and collected a large number of new rights which had not been obtained by “the TwentyOne Demands”. In this process, Cao Rulin, Lu Zongyu and Zhang Zongxiang provided much help. Around the May 4th Movement, there were both facts and rumors about the antiJapanese factions evidence of “betrayal” of Cao, Lu and Zhang. However, Cao, Lu and Zhangs own argument of “no rebate” and “taking back Shandongs rights” could not withstand the test of historical facts and logical inference. Therefore, Nishihara Loans is not only the key link of inheriting “the TwentyOne Demands” and opening the May 4th Movement, but also the key evidence to confirm the identity of Cao, Lu and Zhang as “traitors”.

Under the impact of COVID19, the number of Japanese women who committed suicide in the workplace rose sharply in 2020. This phenomenon is obviously contrary to the socalled “active women” policy promoted by the Japanese government in recent years. In addition, Japan ranked 120th out of 156 countries in the 2021 Global Gender Gap Report, which is in sharp contrast with its status as a developed country. Is there a serious problem of gender discrimination in Japanese society? This paper focuses on Japans labour market and conducts empirical analysis by using the database of “Japan Household Panel Survey (JHPS)” by Keio University. On this basis, combined with qualitative analysis, it is concluded that there is a serious problem of gender discrimination. This discrimination is mainly reflected in three forms: traditional model of gender division of labor in the family, the weakness of female human capital accumulation, and the wage difference caused by statistical discrimination. Moreover, these three forms of gender discrimination interweave and promote each other, forming the intergenerational transmission of discrimination.

The Impact of Japanese Colonial Assimilation and the Reconstruction of Ryukyuan Identity

After being annexed by Japan, the Ryukyua Islands underwent a series of colonial assimilation policies imposed by the Japanese government. These included political military occupation and administrative control, economic capitalist transformation, and cultural and educational initiatives aimed at “Japanization”. These measures systematically deconstructed the inherent identity system of Ryukyu, weakening the national pride and subjectivity of the Ryukyuan people. After the war, the American occupation of Ryukyu and the “reversion movement” following Ryukyus “return” to Japan facilitated the reshaping of Ryukyuan identity to some extent. This involved seeking political recognition, cultural revival, striving for indigenous rights, awakening national consciousness, and pursuing autonomy etc. The future trajectory of Ryukyuan identity reconstruction remains highly uncertain, as the Japanese government continues to assert its rule over Ryukyu, the U.S. military remains stationed in Ryukyu, and the influences of colonialism remain deeply entrenched, continuing to affect the identity of the Ryukyuan people. It is essential to deeply study the specific mechanisms of how Japanese colonial rule impacts Ryukyuan identity, to better understand the complexity of Ryukyuan social culture and promote theoretical research on Japans implementation of “colonial assimilation”.

Causes, Countermeasures, and Implications of Overwork and Karoshi Phenomenon in Japan

The long-term fatigue caused by high labor intensity, long working hours, and excessive psychological pressure leads to the persistent overwork phenomenon which poses a serious threat to peoples lives. As a country with a high incidence rate of karoshi in western countries, the phenomenon of overwork and karoshi has lasted for a long time in Japan. Especially in the 1970s and 1980s, the frequent occurrence of karoshi in Japan attracted much attention of the wide public. The system of lifetime employment, the seniority system, the gender division of labor, the survival difficulties of informally employed workers, and the deep-rooted overtime culture of Japanese companies are the main reasons for the phenomenon of overwork. In order to solve this serious social problem, the Japanese government and the private sector have adopted a variety of countermeasures:enriching and improving relevant laws to prevent karoshi, formulating and refining the identification standard of regarding karoshi as a kind of work-related injury that should be compensated, popularizing correct concept of labor, promoting the reform of working methods and so on. A series of such countermeasureshave alleviated Japans overwork problem to a certain extent. Japans countermeasures against overwork and karoshi have some implications for China.

In Tokugawa Shogunate period, Japan just kept commercial relationship with the Netherlands, and they seldom had contact with other western countries. So, when French ships appeared on the sea around Japan, the rulers of Tokugawa shogunate were surprised. To Japan, France has always wanted to show its status as a European power and display its image as a military power, but in reality France always followed the steps of Britain and the United States, and signed the treaty with Japan relatively late. In developing relationship with Japan, the French once chose to support the feudal Tokugawa Shogunate in order to win more rights and exclude British and American forces. However, due to the constraints of various factors among Japan, Britain, and France, not only did the relationship between France and Tokugawa Shogunate fail to achieve a winwin situation, it was on the contrary gradually declining.

At present, the COVID-19 epidemic has an important impact on the international political situation and then, a complex impact on ChinaJapan relations. The epidemic has a positive and negative effect on the world situation and globalization. It has caused a major negative impact on the global hegemon, namely, the United States, and has complicated majorcountry relations and intensified geopolitical games. On the whole, these changes of macro environment have a significant negative impact on China-Japan relations. In the face of the epidemic, there are some shortterm positive factors for ChinaJapan relations. First of all, joint cooperation in fighting COVID19 and emergency response has partly improved the mutual understanding and national sentiment between China and Japan. Second, it has promoted closer cooperation between China and Japan to reinvigorate their economies, which have been hit hard by the epidemic. Third, China and Japan have increased consensus and mutual understanding on the international situation. But at the same time, the epidemic has disrupted exchanges between China and Japan at all levels, seriously disrupting the pace of warming relations between the two countries. In addition, the changes in Japan's strategy under the epidemic have caused frictions and setbacks in China-Japan relations. First of all, the adjustment of Japan's economic security policy has an impact on bilateral economic and trade relations. Secondly, the renewal of Japan's security and defense policy hinders the construction of a constructive security relationship between China and Japan. In this context, China and Japan should take the opportunity of COVID-19 cooperation to improve mutual understanding, promote global governance and regional cooperation, and deepen economic integration, and continue to write a new chapter in China-Japan relations in the new era.

A Study on Changes of Family Structure in Japan

    Japanese Research    2023, 37 (5): 22-31.   DOI: 10.14156/j.cnki.rbwtyj.2023.05.003
    Abstract1976)      PDF(pc) (4812KB)(426)       Save
Family is the basic unit of social composition, and the family structure affects the overall social and economic development of the population through its direct effect on family relations and family functions. Based on the data of previous national surveys, this paper comprehensively describes the overall situation and prominent characteristics of family structure changes in Japan from 1960 to 2020, and systematically analyzes the dynamic mechanism of family structure changes and its impact on Japan’s population, social development, and economic development. The findings are as follows. Firstly, while the total number of Japanese households continues to expand, the average size of the households keeps shrinking. Secondly, the overall trends of Japanese family household structure include the stability of nuclear families, the decline of stem families and the rise of single households. Lastly, the overall characteristics of the change of nuclear families include the shrinkage of the standard nuclear families, the expansion of the nuclear families consisting of only one couple and the slight increase of singleparent nuclear families. The author believes that the multiple driving forces of Japanese family structure change are demographic, economic, social, and cultural causes including subreplacement fertility and aging population, stagnation of economic development and increase of female labor force participation rate, collapse of family system and equality of the family system, and the trend of staying single and emancipation of women’s mind. The changes of Japanese family structure have a profound impact on its population, social, economic, and cultural development.

    Japanese Research    2024, 38 (1): 42-50.   DOI: 10.14156/j.cnki.rbwtyj.2024.01.005
    Abstract1966)      PDF(pc) (4936KB)(96)       Save
On the basis and framework of Tou Tsuji(Chinese interpreter), the Chinese language education system in modern Japan was formed. The most important educational institution in the early stage was the Tokyo Foreign Language School, which was founded 1873. Historically, it is generally divided into two stages, or two periods, from June 1873(also said by some to be August)to 1886, generally known as the Old Tokyo Foreign Language School(referred to as “Old Foreign language”). It was revived again in 1899, on a more orderly scale, and lasted until after World War II(commonly referred to as the “New Foreign Language”). The Chinese Department in the school is the largest government-run Chinese language education institution in modern Japan. Compared with the foreign language education of the Western system such as English, French and German, which had the function of spreading civilization at the same time, Chinese language education was basically just a practical language education in the fields of diplomacy and trade. An investigation of the evolution of Tokyo Foreign Language School and the relevant government-run Chinese language education institutions can roughly grasp the historical context and basic characteristics of the evolution of Chinese language education in modern Japan.

Ningen Shikkaku is one of the representative masterpieces of Osamu Dazai, who is a world renowned Japanese writer. It narrates the life experience of the main character named ōba Yōzō’s in three different phases childhood, adolescence and adulthood. With an exquisite psychological description, the picture of how he gradually lost his qualification as a human being and finally ended up in self destruction was drawn.Based on some theoretical studies on mutual trust in psychology and an in depth analysis on the relations between three different groups of people(i.e.:the relations between ōba Yōzō and his father, his companion Masao Horiki and his wife Yoshiko respectively),this paper intends to disclose the fact that ōba Yōzō’s “fear towards other human beings” originates, in nature, from his distrust towards interpersonal relations. This paper also aims to raise the readers’awareness on the realistic meaning of how we should live as human beings.

Japans involvement in the South China Sea has a long history, especially since 2010. With the growth of Chinas naval and maritime capabilities, the Japanese governments policy of interfering in South China Sea affairs has begun to appear. In particular, under the guidance of the new version of the “Japan Security Strategy”, the Kishida government, as a country highly dependent on imported energy and foreign trade, in order to prevent a rising China from relying on its own strength and cut off its energy and trade routes in the South China Sea, Japan did not hesitate to design a new OSA system of free military aid to foreign countries, increase the supply of military equipment to South China Sea countries, liaise with South China Sea countries, and strengthen cooperation against China in the South China Sea. It can be said that Fumio Kishidas South China Sea policy is not an isolation policy, but a link and part of Japans foreign strategy, Japans overall maritime strategy, and Japans Indo-Pacific strategy. Although the Kishida governments South China Sea strategy claims to be an international maritime order based on universal values and ensure freedom of navigation and aviation in the South China Sea and other areas, the result not only fails to promote stability and peace in the South China Sea region, but also increases instability and confrontational factors in the region.

As an actor, the state is composed of dominant “organizational body” and recessive “civilizational body”. During the Meiji period in Japan, the “becoming civilized” policy was one of the three basic national policies of Meiji Restoration, which is of great significance for Japans transforming toward the modern society. It has completely changed Japanese peoples consciousness and constructed the modern national civilization body, together with the “rich country, powerful army” and “industry breeding and business initiating” policies. Meiji Restoration and its “becoming civilized” policy have been studied extensively by many scholars from the perspective of history. This paper attempts to explore the “becoming civilized” policy and discuss the characteristics of constructing the civilizational body from psychoculturology, that is, the absolute superiority of “shinkoku” and “koukoku”, the sequence between countries, the illusion of feudal military capitalist country.

Faced with Japans longterm deflation and weak economic growth, the Bank of Japan initiated QQE: the Bank of Japan continued to increase base currency, adopted negative interes tratepolicy, implemented yield curve control, and guided public expectations. Since the implementation of the policy, the time limit of inflation target has been delayed repeatedly. Although the policy improves the economic situation in the short term, it is also interfered by the global market and other countriespolicies. The poor transmission mechanism of monetary policy, the lack of stable expectations, aging population with fewer children, and the mutual restriction of fiscal and monetary policies all affect the economic effect of monetary policy.

During the 30 years of Heisei, the poverty of Japanese women worsened. Young single women, single parent women(single mothers)and single elderly women constitute the main poverty groups of women. The poverty rate of the former exceeds 30%, and the latter two exceed 50%, far higher than the average level in Japan. The reason for womens poverty is that the traditional gender division of labor is still deeply rooted, and the institutional oppression and gender inequality in the workplace are still strong. Due to the unfriendly employment environment, poor women are in a disadvantageous position in the workplace. They are mostly engaged in informal employment with low wages and poor benefits. Over the past 30 years, the size of Japanese families has gradually shrunk and their functions have weakened. The social security system based on marriage relations has lagged behind the times. In particular, the arrival of the “single society” has actually exacerbated womens poverty. The Japanese government has launched a series of policies and measures to solve womens poverty, such as equal rights for men and women, promotion of womens participation in the workplace, and childcare support, but the effect is not as good as expected.

Based on a brief description of the scale, structure and characteristics of these nobilities in different historical periods, this paper analyzes the influence of the nobility tradition on Japanese nationality: the class supremacy, the emphasis on inheritance, and the dual personality of Japanese people.

Domestic research on Japanese tea ceremony culture seems to lack two perspectives, namely, the perspective of Japanese history and the perspective of the overall structure of Japanese culture. Tea ceremony was formed from the middle and late Muromachi period to the Azuchi-Momoyama period in Japan. It is a product of troubled times and has an obvious tendency of seclusion. Tea ceremony has the characteristics of non-routine, sociability, etiquette, and spirituality. It occupies a non-mainstream position in the overall structure of Japanese culture. It is hard to call tea ceremony a representative of Japanese culture. It is also hard to say that “idle silence” and “dead silence” are the mainstream aesthetic consciousness of the Japanese. Nevertheless, tea ceremony still plays a special social role in Japanese social culture. The investigation of tea ceremony culture in this paper may have some enlightenment for the future study of Japanese culture.

Compared with European and American countries, Japan suffered the most severe damage during the Great Depression of the capitalist world in 1929, and the agriculture suffered the most. This agricultural crisis was not entirely caused by external shocks. Part of the Japanese government's economic policies before the outbreak of the crisis had a serious negative impact on agricultural development, making it a shortcoming in the economic system. After the crisis broke out, the government was affected by the growing fascist forces when dealing with agricultural issues. Instead of saving agriculture, the government's policies further accelerated the formation of an agriculturalcontrolled economic system aimed at war preparations. Through the analysis of this article, we can get a glimpse of the Japanese government's understanding of the position and role of the rural economy in the development of capitalism, and basic governance concepts. Some of these lessons are also beneficial to the modernization of developing countries.

In recent years, Japan has proposed the “three pillars” of its foreign propaganda strategy and implemented them in the field of territorial propaganda, actively promoting the reform of its territorial propaganda mechanism. It has successively set up a “Minister in Charge of Territorial Integrity” in the cabinet, established an “Office of Policy Planning and Coordination on Territory and Sovereignty”, established a “Symposium of experts on internal and external communication of territorial sovereignty”, etc. At the same time, the Japanese government attaches great importance to the diversified expansion of its territorial claims promotion methods. For example, in addition to continuing to focus on using traditional media such as newspapers and radio for promotion, it actively utilizes new media channels such as government official websites and international social networking sites, and emphasizes the use of diversified promotion methods such as videos, anime, and promotional posters in the promotion process. In addition, the Japanese government has also taken measures to strengthen publicity, such as setting up a “National Museum of Territory and Sovereignty” specifically for regular propaganda activities, mandatory revision of domestic primary and secondary school textbooks, and implementation of regular public opinion surveys on territorial issues, in an attempt to gain a favorable position in public opinion and legal battles related to territorial disputes. While further expanding the way of propaganda of territorial claims, China should pay more attention to refuting the wrong views in the propaganda of Japanese territorial claims from the perspective of international law, and further strengthen the “discourse construction” of the ownership of the Diaoyu Islands in the domestic and foreign discourse environment, so as to better safeguard Chinas territorial sovereignty.

Consequently, in terms of both theme and style, Taketori Monogatari contains many elements of traditional Chinese culture, and at the same time it also shows unique Japanese aesthetic taste and cultural features. The essay argues that studies on the tale will not only help us further understand the features of Japanese monogatari, but also the cultural transformation of Heian Period.
